£500,000 Blackburn Rovers ace drops from starting XI amid League One club's winless start

Blackburn Rovers decided to sanction a number departures in the summer, one of which saw Connor O’Riordan leave on loan.

Blackburn Rovers had a busy summer transfer window with players moving out on free transfers, loan moves and some for sizeable fees.

The most notable exit was that of Sammie Szmodics, who got a deserved Premier League move with newly-promoted Ipswich Town.

However, as they frequently do, Rovers also took the chance to send some of their younger fringe players out on loan. Among those to head out temporarily and remain in the EFL was centre-back Connor O’Riordan, who joined from Crewe Alexandra in January for a reported £500,000.

The Blackburn Rovers starlet joinedCambridge United, but the League One side are enduring a dismal start.

The U’s struggles

After nine games, Cambridge United are bottom of the League One table having taken just one point from nine games. Led by Garry Monk, they have lost eight matches in the third-tier.

The former Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday boss retains the club’s backing, but they could be forced into a decision sooner rather than later if such poor form continues.

Unfortunately, Blackburn Rovers loanee O’Riordan has not benefitted from the struggles.

The 20-year-old started his first three games for Cambridge and played 68 minutes off the bench against Mansfield Town midway through last month. However, the Irishman has not played since, remaining an unused substitute against Wycombe Wanderers, Rotherham United and Exeter City while missing the squad for the Lincoln City game completely.

Rovers alerted

It’s still very early in the season, but Blackburn Rovers will almost certainly be aware of the drop in game time O’Riordan is experiencing. The point of the loan was to give him action away from Ewood Park and as it stands, he is not getting the minutes desired.

That, combined with the dismal form of Cambridge United, may well have the Championship side considering their options regarding the talented defender come January.

Who is the manager of Blackpool?

O’Riordan thrived in League Two and certainly has the attributes to be a success at League One level too. His potential means he’s got a good chance of becoming a Rovers regular further down the line as well.

His current situation will be under the microscope in Lancashire, especially if his starting XI omission persists.
