Sheffield Wednesday head to Blackpool on Tuesday in the latest round of the Carabao Cup at Bloomfield Road.

Sheffield Wednesday looked to have beaten QPR in their last Championship outing over the weekend after Barry Bannan’s stoppage time strike. However, they conceded shortly after following Alfie Lloyd’s last-gasp leveller following a goalmouth scramble.

The Owls began the new season with an impressive 4-0 win over Plymouth Argyle but have since struggled for results. They are winless in their last four league fixtures.

Nevertheless, Danny Rohl’s side have won both of their first two Carabao Cup clashes against Hull City and Grimsby Town. They will be eager to progress to the next round with a win over Blackpool.

The Seasiders have turned to Steve Bruce as their new manager to replace Neil Critchley. The former Birmingham City, Sunderland and Newcastle United boss won his first game last time out 2-1 at home to Exeter City after a late winner by defender James Husband.

Blackpool have seen off Burton Albion and Blackburn Rovers so far in the cup and will be hoping to cause their upcoming opponents some issues.

Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…

Blackpool have the new manager bounce under Steve Bruce and will be in confident mood after beating Exeter City.

Sheffield Wednesday have been struggling defensively over recent weeks and need to improve at the back. This game is an opportunity for the Owls to shake things up again and give some fringe players the chance to show what they can do.

“The outcome of this tie is likely to depend on what teams they both put out. The hosts will fancy their chances if Danny Rohl makes wholesale changes, which he has done so far in the competition against Hull City and Grimsby Town.

“Therefore, for that reason, I’m going to go for a home win for Bruce against his former club.”

Prediction: Blackpool 2-1 Sheffield Wednesday

Who is the manager of Blackpool?

James Ray

“Steve Bruce oversaw his first win as Blackpool boss over the weekend. That will have been a big boost to his confidence after a long time out of the dugout and it will be hoped he can enjoy a fruitful stint with the club.

“A reunion with former club Sheffield Wednesday means there will be that extra determination to get one over the Owls. However, it could be an unhappy reunion for Bruce.

“Wednesday have started poorly but they’ve kept their high levels in the cup and will be out to find some joy again in this one. And, against League One opponents, I can see Rohl’s side emerging victorious.

“It could be close though. I’ll say this ends in a 2-1 away win.”

Prediction: Blackpool 1-2 Sheffield Wednesday
