Birmingham City have moved to bring Tom Huddlestone in from Wigan Athletic as a new assistant coach, it has been confirmed.

Birmingham City are a club going through a period of change as they start a new chapter in their history.

Relegation from the Championship was far from ideal but it has provided the new American owners with the chance to wipe the slate clean and start afresh. They have done just that, recruiting almost an entirely new squad and hiring a new boss in Chris Davies.

Things have also changed in the head coach’s backroom team too. Ashley Cole, who joined in October 2023, saw his departure confirmed last week, taking up a full-time role in the England setup.

Now, Birmingham City have swiftly announced his replacement.

Swooping on League One rivals Wigan Athletic, the Blues have hired former Tottenham Hotspur and Hull City midfielder Tom Huddlestone as an assistant first-team coach. He joins just a matter of months after linking up with the Latics in July.

Huddlestone had gathered experience as a player-coach with Manchester United’s U21s before joining Shaun Maloney’s backroom team but now opts for another change of scenery as he joins the highly ambitious City.

He follows Ben Petty and Nathan Gardiner in joining Davies’ backroom team in recent months.
