Barnsley are interested in Stoke City striker Niall Ennis, according to Darren Witcoop on X.

Barnsley are keen on luring the Championship man to Oakwell in the upcoming January transfer window. He has made nine appearances in all competitions so far this season for his current club, seven of which have come in the league, and he hasn’t scored.

Ennis, 25, is under contract with the Potters until the summer of 2026 but his future in Staffordshire is up in the air right now. He joined them back in February under their former boss Steven Schumacher and he has since been replaced by Narcis Pelach.

In this latest update regarding his situation at the Bet365 Stadium by Witcoop on X, he is ‘expected’ to head out the exit door this winter with the Tykes keeping tabs on his situation as they look to gain promotion from League One under Darrell Clarke.

Barnsley could see Ennis as someone to bolster their frontline.

The attacker is a former England youth international who rose up through the academy at Wolves.

He was a regular for the Midlands outfit at various different youth levels before going on to play once for their first-team.

The Wolverhampton-born man was loaned out by the Premier League side to Shrewsbury TownDoncaster Rovers and Burton Albion to get some experience under his belt.

Plymouth Argyle landed him permanently in 2020 and he was a hit during his time at Home Park, firing 24 goals in 97 matches.

That form earned him a switch to Blackburn Rovers last summer but his move to Ewood Park didn’t work out.

Ennis managed to find the net only once in Lancashire and was sold to Stoke City after just seven months.

After joining the Potters, he told their website: “It’s a huge privilege getting the opportunity to represent Stoke City. I know the fans want to see exciting, front-foot football and that is exactly the type of team I want to play in too.

“Clearly as a striker I want to score goals and get the fans off their seats. That’s what I’ll be aiming to do for Stoke City and, as an absolute minimum, the fans can expect me to give my all for the cause in every minute of every game.”

What now?

Barnsley are now being linked with a swoop for Ennis and could provide him with a change of scene.

The Tykes are sat in 9th and are a point outside the play-offs.
