Birmingham City should let 21-year-old leave on loan in January: Opinion

Birmingham City have the chance to alter their squad in the January transfer window ahead of the second-half of the season.
Birmingham City could look to bring in some new faces to bolster their ranks. They may also look to offload a few players to free up space and funds.
The Blues are eyeing an immediate promotion from League One this season following their relegation from the Championship. They are sat in 2nd place in the table after being leapfrogged by Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday night and are back in action this weekend with a home clash against Northampton Town.
Chris Davies will have a few decisions to make regarding certain individuals this winter. One player he should look to loan out is defender Josh Williams.
Birmingham City are well stocked up with options in his position and the youngster would benefit from getting some more experience under his belt in the Football League.
Birmingham City should loan out defender
Williams ended up staying put over the summer and provides back-up at the moment.
However, his chances of breaking into the first-team ahead of Ethan Laird and Alfons Sampsted are slim.
Instead of playing development football, he needs regular senior game time and a temporary exit would suit all parties involved.
Williams has made only one appearance so far this season for Birmingham City.
His contract expires in 2026 meaning he still has another couple of years to break into Davies’ team.
He needs to show what he is capable of though and joining another side on loan would give him a good opportunity.
Williams has been on the books at Birmingham City for his whole career to date and has risen up through their academy.
The full-back was a regular at various different youth levels and has played 10 games to date for the first-team.
He was loaned out to Cheltenham Town last term and made nine outings for the Robins in the third tier.
What now?
Birmingham City didn’t include Williams on their 25-man squad list which suggests he isn’t in their plans right now.
He will have to wait until January to join another Football League club. If he was to be loaned out before then, he would have to link up with someone in the National League or under.
The Blues are back in action this weekend with a home clash against Northampton Town. They won 1-0 away at Sutton United in the FA Cup last time out.
