Bolton Wanderers face fresh competition in chase for Charlton Athletic fringe man

Bolton Wanderers have been joined by Stevenage and Shrewsbury Town in the race for Charlton Athletic’s Terry Taylor, as per Football Insider.
Bolton Wanderers have found great difficulty in improving on last season’s 3rd place finish. Ian Evatt’s BWFC marched to Wembley under twelve months ago but were ultimately were defeated by Oxford United in the play-off final.
This time around they find themselves struggling for form, with fans calling for the sacking of Evatt as the Trotters float around the upper end of mid table.
Stevenage meanwhile spent last season flirting with the play-offs and after the departure of Steve Evans it was predicted that the Boro would find this season difficult. They’ve found joy and shown solidity under Alex Revell.
Shrewsbury Town meanwhile are fighting for survival under Gareth Ainsworth. A win over Wrexham moved them into 21st, but they’re still five points from safety and have played more games than all three sides below them.
Now though, while in differing positions in the League One table, all three sides are chasing Charlton Athletic’s Terry Taylor.
After initial links with Bolton Wanderers, Football Insider says Stevenage and Shrewsbury Town have joined the race. The Addicks are open to loan offers with the Welshman back down the pecking order.
Addicks’ forgotten man?
Though Taylor has made 14 appearances for Charlton Athletic in all competitions this season, the Bolton Wanderers target has made the least of any midfielder in the league for Nathan Jones’ men.
He has made meaningful contributions to the Addicks though with assists against Southend and Chelsea’s U21s in cup competitions.
He does have the support of some corners of the Charlton fan base with some supporters arguing in favour of Taylor staying, showing preference to him over Luton Town loan signing Alan Campbell. However, a move elsewhere could beckon with BWFC, Stevenage and Shrewsbury Town keen.
Who to choose?
With respect to Bolton Wanderers, a move for Taylor might not be as beneficial for them as they think.
Midfield options of Kyle Dempsey, Josh Sheehan and George Thomason and Jay Matete along with the return of Aaron Morely from a successful spell at Wycombe Wanderers and the signing of Joe Randall from Peterborough begs the question of would Taylor substantially improve the squad.
Perhaps the BWFC focus should be on fixing a back line which has shipped 14 less goals than it did in the entirety of last season and the 8th-most in the division.
Taylor certainly could prove to be beneficial for both Stevenage and Shrewsbury. Having good technical qualities and the ‘dirty side of the game’ in his roster, he may slot more into Boro style more so than Ainsworth’s Shrewsbury, assuming he can break into Revell’s side, which has provided a lot of minutes to all his midfielders across the season.
