Bolton Wanderers boss Ian Evatt has said Scott Arfield will return to training next week.

Bolton Wanderers have been without the midfielder over recent times with a calf issue. They are back in action this weekend with a home clash against Wigan Athletic but he will have to sit out again.

Arfield, 36, could come back into contention for their away trip to Wycombe Wanderers next Friday. He has made 11 appearances in all competitions so far this season, eight of which have come in League One.

In this latest update regarding his condition ahead of Saturday, Evatt has shared this latest injury update regarding the veteran, as per a report by The Bolton News: “He did his calf in the warm up against Cambridge. He is back on the grass and will be back training early next week. It was significant enough to keep him out for a couple of weeks but nothing major.”

Getting Arfield back will be a boost for Bolton Wanderers.

Prior to joining the Trotters, he spent time in America with Charlotte FC under the guidance of Dean Smith and scored three goals in 33 for the MLS club.

The former Canada international, who made 19 caps, started his career at Falkirk as a youngster.

He then moved down the border from Scotland and joined Huddersfield Town for three years.

Burnley snapped him up in 2018 and he spent five years at Turf Moor.

Arfield went on to play 193 games for the Clarets during his time in Lancashire and scored 22 goals, helping them gain promotion to the Premier League twice during his spell at Turf Moor.

Rangers lured him back up to Scotland in 2019 and he became a key player for the Ibrox club, firing 43 goals in 233 matches before his Charlotte switch.

What now?

Arfield moved back closer to home when Bolton Wanderers came calling earlier this year.

The best is probably yet to come from him in a Trotters’ shirt as they eye promotion to the Championship.

They lost in the play-off final last term to Oxford United at Wembley.

Evatt’s men are sat in 7th place in the table and are only a point off Reading in 6th as they prepare to play Wigan Athletic.
