They are in the same group at Chelsea Under-21’s and League Two new boys Bromley.

Speaking ahead of their upcoming clash, Jones has told the official club website: “It’s an opportunity for us to win another football game. First and foremost, we will pick a team to win a football game. We want to breed that – we don’t want to take anything lightly and we don’t want to do anything that upsets the rhythm and the quality of the work that we’re doing.

“But what we have is a squad that’s itching to play and we’ve got people like Matty Godden, Allan Campbell and Karoy Anderson that needs minutes. There will be some changes, but it all revolves around us wanting to win the football game.”

The attacker has also played for the likes of Stevenage, Peterborough United and Coventry City in the past.

Campbell arrived at The Valley from Luton Town on loan and boosts Jones’ options in the middle of the park.

The Scotsman has made a couple of appearances for the Addicks so far and will be eyeing more opportunities over the coming weeks.

He spent the last campaign with Millwall on a temporary basis and made 12 outings for the Lions in the Championship.

As for Anderson, the 19-year-old has a bright future ahead of him and has a chance to show more of what he can do if he starts against Cambridge United.

The youngster has risen up through the academy of his current club and was a regular for them at various different youth levels before making the step up into their first-team.

He has since played 33 games, four of which have come this term, and has also been loaned out in the past to Aldershot Town in the National League to get some experience and boost his development.

What now?

Charlton Athletic’s priority is obviously the league and they are aiming for promotion to the second tier.

They have made a strong start and won 1-0 away at Shrewsbury Town last time out after striker Gassan Ahadme’s first goal.

Their match against Cambridge United is a chance to give some fringe players and youngsters the opportunity to play.
