Oldham Athletic have signed former Hull City and Stoke City midfielder Sam Clucas after his exit from Rotherham United, as announced by their official club website.

The National League side have swooped to sign the ex-Premier League man on a deal until the end of the season.

Clucas, 34, cut ties with Rotherham United at the end of last season when his contract expired and he has been weighing up his options since then.

He has now made the move to Boundary Park and has told the Latics’ website: “I’m delighted to sign and finally get this done. I’ve been training with the group for a couple of weeks now and it’s a great group to come into.

“There’s a mix of experience and youth, and the manager is great to work with so this is an exciting opportunity. It’s obviously a massive club that shouldn’t be at the level they are, so if I can come in and share my experience with the lads then hopefully we can achieve some success.”

Clucas will be pleased to have sorted himself a new home and will want to get plenty of game time in the fifth tier with Oldham Athletic under the guidance of former Fleetwood Town, Shrewsbury Town and Tranmere Rovers boss Micky Mellon.

The Lincoln-born man started his career with spells at Lincoln City, Hereford United, Mansfield Town and Chesterfield.

Hull City snapped him up in 2015 and he went on to become a key player for the East Yorkshire outfit during his two years at the MKM Stadium.

Clucas helped the Tigers win the Championship play-offs after his first season under Steve Bruce and they beat Sheffield Wednesday at Wembley.

He caught the eye in the top flight and secured a switch to Swansea City after Hull City were relegated.

The ex-England C international wasn’t able to make an impact with the Swans though and left for Stoke City.

Clucas went on to make 143 matches for the Potters in all competitions and scored 19 goals.

What now?

He spent last term at Rotherham United in the second tier but they opted against extending his stay.

Oldham Athletic have now snapped him up in an eye-catching move and he will be hoping to help them return to the Football League.
