Wigan Athletic boss Shaun Maloney has said Liverpool loanee Calvin Ramsay will ‘definitely’ start one of their next two games.

Ramsay, 21, has struggled to get into their starting XI since his summer loan switch from Liverpool due to competition from James Carragher and Steven Sessegnon.

Maloney has said, as per a report by Wigan Today: “Calvin’s still finding his feet here. I really like him as a player, and the biggest thing – and I’ve spoken to him a lot about this – is understanding what I need from him in that position.

“He’s found that hard, and that’s not his fault, it’s my fault. I need to find a better way of making him understand what we’re doing here. But in the next couple of games, he’ll definitely start one of them, and he knows that.”

The Scotsman has since made four appearances in all competitions, three of which have come in the league.

Liverpool signed him in 2022 after he caught the eye at Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership.

He rose up through the academy ranks of the Dons before going on to play 39 games for their first-team as a youngster.

Ramsay has featured on two occasions for the senior team at Anfield so far and was loaned out to Preston North End and Bolton Wanderers last term. However, he struggled for minutes with the pair.

What now?

His switch to Wigan Athletic was a chance to get some game time but it hasn’t gone to plan just yet for him.

Maloney is sticking with him though and has said he will get the nod against either Peterborough United or Stockport County.

The Latics have drawn their last three matches in a row 0-0 against Lincoln City, Stevenage and Exeter City.
