Birmingham City saw a big overhaul of their playing squad in the summer, with midfielder Ivan Sunjic among those to depart.

Birmingham City had former Croatia international Sunjic on the books for five years, bringing him in from Dinamo Zagreb in the summer of 2019.

His time at St. Andrew’s was a rollercoaster one with highs and lows, also spending the 2022/23 campaign on loan in Germany with Hertha Berlin. Overall, he played 173 times for the Blues across all competitions, chipping in with seven goals and six assists in the process.

As part of the summer squad makeover, a number of players moved on from the relegated side at the end of their contracts. Sunjic was among them, entering free agency.

But just how has Sunjic fared since moving on from Birmingham City in the summer?

A new adventure

Before moving to St. Andrew’s over five years ago, Sunjic had spent his entire career in his native Croatia. He came through the Dinamo Zagreb academy, then spending two years at NK Lokomotiva before returning to Dinamo.

He embarked on a German challenge when down the Birmingham City pecking order and since leaving the latter, Sunjic has moved to the fourth new country of his career.

Who is the manager of Blackpool?

Cypriot side Pafos FC pounced to bring the 27-year-old in on a free transfer at the start of August, a little over a month after he had left the midlands outfit.

While not a nailed on starter yet, Sunjic has played eight times for his new club, chipping in with a goal and an assist. He’s helped them go unbeaten in the Cyprus League and aided their qualification for the UEFA Conference League.

Five of his outings have been starts and three have come off the bench.

Sunjic’s fresh start

While Birmingham City held onto some key assets in the summer – which Sunjic certainly could have been in League One – it felt like the right time for him to move on from St. Andrew’s.

Chris Davies oversaw a revamp of the midfield ranks after Sunjic moved on. All of Tomoki Iwata, Taylor Gardner-Hickman, Marc Leonard, Willum Thor Willumsson and Luke Harris signed as new options in the middle with Seung-ho Paik, Brandon Khela, Alfie Chang and Krystian Bielik still on the books.

It was the right time for the two to part ways, allowing Birmingham City to freshen up their midfield department and paving the way for Sunjic to embark on an exciting Cypriot journey where he can fight for a league title and test himself in Europe.
