Barnsley are back in action this evening with an away trip to Old Trafford take on Manchester United in the Carabao Cup third round.

Barnsley head into the game having beaten Mansfield Town and Sheffield United in their first two ties of the competition. The Tykes lost 3-0 away at Stevenage in their last League One outing.

Darrell Clarke’s side are currently sat in 7th place in the table as they eye promotion to the Championship. They were beaten in the play-offs last season by Bolton Wanderers at the semi-finals stage over two legs.

The Tykes have 10 points on the board from their first six fixtures and are only outside the top six on goal difference. Their upcoming clash against Manchester United is a chance to test themselves against Premier League opposition.

Erik ten Hag’s side won the Carabao Cup in 2023 after they saw off Newcastle United in the final at Wembley.

Barnsley will be without defender Donovan Pines due to concussion. Clarke has said, as per the Yorkshire Post: “It’s concussion. He started to feel sick and we’re going to miss him for a period of time. It’s (down to the) concussion guidelines so we’ll see how quickly that goes but it normally takes a substantial period of time to hit the guidelines. Everyone gets a little bit panicky now with head injuries so we’ll have to manage that situation and go with the guidelines.”

Davis Kellior-Dunn is cup-tied after playing for Mansfield Town last month.

Starting XI

Slonina; Cotter, de Gevigney, Roberts, Earl; O’Keeffe, Craig, Connell, Phillips; Watters, Cosgrove

Chelsea loanee Gabriel Slonina has been Barnsley’s first choice since his summer switch. He was given the green light to leave Stamford Bridge to get some experience under his belt.

In defence, Clarke could go for Barry Cotter, Mael de Gevigney, Marc Roberts and Josh Earl as they look to keep Manchester United at bay. It is a blow that Pines is sideline and they will miss his physicality at the back.

The Tykes have a few useful players to pick from in midfield like Tottenham Hotspur loan man Matthew Craig, who spent time last term at Doncaster Rovers in League Two.

Luca Connell and Adam Phillips are two key player for the Yorkshire outfit and will be in for a busy evening against the Red Devils in the middle of the park.

In attack, Barnsley may look to use the pace of Max Watters as they look to catch Ten Hag’s men on the break.

They also have the physical presence of Cosgrove up top. In addition, Fabio Jalo and Stephen Humphrys could make impacts off the bench if they are needed.
