Portsmouth boss John Mousinho believes Ben Stevenson would do a ‘job’ for a club in League One.

Portsmouth looked at offloading the midfielder late in the last transfer window but weren’t able to find him a new home before the deadline. He subsequently ended up staying put at Fratton Park and will now need to wait until January to leave.

Stevenson, 27, was left out of their 25-man squad for this current Championship season along with Tom Lowery. He is under contract with the Hampshire outfit until June 2025.

Mousinho has said, as per a report by The News: “He couldn’t really get a game last year through no fault of his own, even though I thought he was really good when he came in against Port Vale and in the cup games. He always trained really well and really contributed to the squad last season and to the success we had.”

He added: “Ben can more than handle operating at League One level and do a job there. I suppose it’s sometimes difficult for other clubs looking into it and seeing he hasn’t had the game time, but certainly from what I saw I know he’s definitely a capable player at that level.”

Stevenson has played twice for Portsmouth in this campaign but has fallen down the pecking order.

They risk losing him for free next summer if they don’t cash in on him this winter and an exit would suit all parties involved. He would get more game time and his departure would free up space and funds in his current team’s squad.

The Leicester-born man joined Mousinho’s side in June 2023 to add more depth to their midfield ranks.

He went on to play only 10 times for them last term, chipping in with a single goal, and found it hard to break into their starting XI due to competition for places in his position.

Stevenson rose up through the academy ranks at Coventry City and was a regular for the Sky Blues at various different youth levels as a youngster before going on to play 48 games for their first-team.

Wolves signed him in 2018 and they ended up getting promoted to the Premier League during his time there.

However, he didn’t get many minutes at Molineux and shipped out to Jumilla in Spain and Colchester United before joining the latter permanently.

Stevenson became a key player for the U’s in the middle of the park in League Two and later moved to Forest Green Rovers before catching the eye of Portsmouth.

What now?

His move hasn’t worked out and his situation is up in the air right now.

All signs point towards him leaving when the next transfer window opens.

Portsmouth are back in action this weekend away at Burnley following their loss to West Brom.
