Birmingham City boss Chris Davies says Tomoki Iwata was someone the club were pushing to sign ‘for a while’ in the summer.

Birmingham City oversaw a huge rebuild of the playing squad in the summer transfer window as they bid to form a side capable of returning to the Championship at the first time of asking.

The Blues have started as they mean to go on too. Five games have yielded four wins and a draw, leaving them 2nd in the table and only behind on goal difference.

Last time out, Chris Davies’ side triumphed in their high-profile game against Wrexham. The hosts won 3-1, with Tomoki Iwata netting to finish the scoring after Jay Stansfield’s brace dragged Davies and co back ahead.

It was Japanese star Iwata’s first outing for Birmingham City since joining from Celtic, and Davies has now opened up on the pursuit to bring him in during the summer transfer window.

As quoted by Birmingham Live, the boss said that Iwata, who has got ‘a bit of everything’, was someone the club were pushing to bring in for some time. Davies said:

“Iwata was a target we were pushing for a while, we really wanted him here and knew all about his qualities. He’s got a bit of everything as a midfielder.

“He’s got the technical skills, the understanding of the game, but he’s also got physicality and strength.”
