'That kind of level' – Birmingham City compared to Ipswich Town by rival boss
Today at 05:26 AM
Birmingham City have been compared to Ipswich Town by Exeter City boss Gary Caldwell.
Birmingham City won 2-0 away against the Grecians last night after goals by Jay Stansfield and Tomoki Iwata.
The Blues returned to winning ways following their loss against Shrewsbury Town last weekend.
Speaking after the game, Caldwell said, as per a report by DevonLive: “I said it before the game and I am even more convinced now that Birmingham will win the league. They have so much quality, strength, speed, power and not just on the park, but on the bench and probably left back in Birmingham as well.”
He added: “I said before they’d win the league and I am even more convinced after seeing them live, they are going to win the league and by a long way in my opinion. We have lots of lessons to learn, they are a Championship team in the making and potentially even more than that.
“They are like Ipswich, on that kind of level. They were by far the better team on the night but we have to look at our performance levels and improve to get what we want from the season.”
Birmingham City compared to Ipswich Town
Birmingham City are aiming for an immediate return to the Championship at the first time of asking.
Ipswich Town were in League One for a couple of years before they managed to claw themselves out under Kieran McKenna.
They then carried their momentum into the second tier and went up to the Premier League in the last campaign along with Leicester City and Southampton.
The Tractor Boys are now aiming to stay up in the top flight this term and are a good benchmark for the Blues as they look to follow suit.
If Davies was to guide Birmingham City to promotion, they would look to adapt quickly to life in the league above.
The Blues’ current squad is littered with quality and depth and they will be relieved to have won at Exeter City.
What now?
Birmingham City are back in action on Sunday with an away trip to Blackpool in the FA Cup second round and that tie is a chance to play some fringe players and youngsters should they wish to.
The Blues are sat in 3rd place in the table behind Wycombe Wanderers and Wrexham. They are five points off the Chairboys at the summit with a game in-hand.
