Wigan Athletic are back in League One action this weekend with an away trip to the Memorial Ground to take on Bristol Rovers.

Wigan Athletic have made a slow start to the new season and will be hoping to hit some form following the international break. They were beaten 2-1 away at Birmingham City last time out but gave a good account of themselves against a side who will likely get promoted.

The Latics have three points on the board from their first four games and their only win was against newly promoted Crawley Town at home last month. They find themselves in 20th position as they look to start risking up the table.

Shaun Maloney delved into the transfer window over the summer to bring in the likes of Toby Sibbick, Joe Hugill and Jensen Weir, among others, to bolster his ranks. They also saw Charlie Hughes, Jordan Jones and Stephen Humphrys leave.

As per Wigan Today, Michael Olakigbe, Tyrese Francois and Luke Robinson remain sidelined. Callum McManaman is fit though and they will also make checks on Jonny Smith.

Starting XI

Tickle; Carragher, Kerr, Aimson, Chambers; Smith, Weir; Thomas, Aasgaard, Rankine; Hugill

Sam Tickle is one of the best goalkeepers outside of the Premier League and Wigan Athletic will be delighted that they were able to keep hold of him over the summer. Veteran Andy Lonergan provides back-up to him between the sticks.

At right-back, James Carragher is enjoying a lot of game time at the moment and battles it out with Steven Sessegnon for his position.

Jason Kerr and Will Aimson have formed a partnership at the heart of the backline and both be eager to keep Bristol Rovers at bay on Saturday.

Liverpool loanee Luke Chambers is back at The Brick Community Stadium for another spell after impressing during the second-half of last term.

In midfield, Matt Smith is likely to get the nod again by Maloney. The Latics then have a few options to pick from including Weir, Baba Adeeko and Scott Smith.

Wigan Athletic have attacking players who they hope can hurt Bristol Rovers like Dion Rankine, Thelo Aasgaard and Silko Thomas. McManaman is also back which is a boost.

Up front, they have a couple of different players to pick from such as Hugill, who is on loan from Manchester United. He spent time at Burton Albion in the third tier earlier this year to get some experience under his belt and he is expected to lead the line here.

Dale Taylor was acquired from Nottingham Forest on a temporary basis last month and is an alternative option at the top end of the pitch if needed.
