West Brom make contact with Sheffield Wednesday man amid Birmingham City interest

West Brom have made contact with Sheffield Wednesday man Josh Windass over a potential summer deal amid interest from Birmingham City, as per Birmingham World.

West Brom are preparing for another season in the Championship this summer.

Carlos Corberan’s side finished inside the top six last season, but failed to make it past Southampton in the play-offs who eventually went on to win promotion to the Premier League.

Sheffield Wednesday narrowly avoided relegation with Danny Rohl turning their fortunes around, whilst Birmingham City suffered relegation on the final day and are gearing up for League One football.

Windass, 30, played 25 league games for the Owls last season. He scored six and assisted two from central midfield and he has been a regular feature at Hillsborough since joining in 2020.

His performances have helped guide Sheffield Wednesday back to the second tier, but now it appears an exit is on the cards.

Contract renewal talks appear to have stalled and it seems it’s increasingly unlikely he will sign a new deal this summer at Sheffield Wednesday.

Birmingham City have been interested in a deal for some time now, but the Baggies have recently swooped in and made contact with Windass’ representatives to figure out how interested he would be in a switch to The Hawthorns.

Who is this?

Fierce competition

The 30-year-old is a proven Football League talent.

The attacking midfielder can play several roles in the middle of the park and he would be a handy addition for most clubs in the second and third tier.

West Brom will be fighting for Premier League promotion next season, whilst Birmingham City will be hoping to get out of League One at the first time of asking.

The prospect of top flight football may be enough to tempt Windass into a move to West Brom this summer as the experienced man is yet to experience that in his career.

However, it remains to be seen which club will win this race and it’s certainly one to keep an eye on.

Flying up

Rohl did an incredible job with the Owls last season.

The German boss has all the momentum in the world behind his side at the moment and their business so far this summer has been promising.

Losing Windass would be a blow for them, but Sheffield Wednesday survived without him for nearly half of last season and it wouldn’t be the end of the world for their hopes of success next season.

The Owls are the team to watch currently as they could fly up the Championship table after having been so close to relegation last time around.
