Wycombe Wanderers expected to seal record-breaking deal for 26-year-old midfielder

Wycombe Wanderers are set to sign Magnus Westergaard from Danish club Viborg, according to a report from Tipsbladet.
Wycombe Wanderrers have been the surprise package in League One so far this season. After finishing 10th last year, they’ve spent the majority of this campaign inside the top two so far.
The Chairboys have only ever spent one season in England’s second tier, coming under Gareth Ainsworth in the 2020/21 season. In fact, Wanderers only reached the Football League for the first time in 1993, having spent the majority of their history in non-league.
The recent departure of club legend Matt Bloomfield as manager to Championship side Luton has come as a shock to the system for those at Adams Park, but the club aren’t letting it derail their transfer business.
According to Danish news outlet Tipsbladet, Wycombe Wanderers are set to sign Viborg midfielder Magnus Westergaard.
He would become the club’s third signing of the January transfer window, breaking the transfer record set by the deal for fellow Danish ace Anders Hagelskjaer earlier this month.
Defensive reinforcements
Wycombe Wanderers are going about the January transfer window as a club behaving like they wants to finish inside the top two. The signings of Sonny Bradley and Hagelskjaer add to their strength at the back.
Bradley, a member of Derby County’s promotion winning side last season, had been mainly third choice behind Curtis Nelson and Eiran Cashin both this campaign and the last. However, a goal already on his debut may prove to be a boost for the former Luton Town man as he seeks to make the most of his opportunity to gain consistent game time.
Hagelskjaer, like Westergaard, hails from Denmark, though has plied his trade in Norway since 2023. The 27 year-old defender made 73 appearances for Molde and brings European experience to Buckinghamshire.
Having already supposedly broken their record transfer fee on Hagelskjaer, Wycombe Wanderers are set to do so again less than two weeks later on Westergaard.
A needed addition
Wycombe Wanderers have evidently highlighted where they need to improve, and for good reason.
Despite being the league’s top goalscorers with help from Richard Kone, they’ve conceded 27 league goals this campaign. Only Barnsley, Reading and Bolton have conceded more in the top 11 this season.
Westergaard’s use in midfield has allowed him to find 10 goal contributions across 21 games played in Denmark for Viborg, which suggests he’ll add another dimension to Wycombe’s midfield following the return of Aaron Morley back to Bolton Wanderers.
