Bradford City defender Neill Byrne is expected to be out for a couple of weeks due to injury, as detailed in a report by the Telegraph & Argus.

Bradford City were forced to substitute the centre-back last Saturday in their latest League Two outing away at Walsall after just 20 minutes. They then left him out of their squad for their Bristol Street Motors win against Mansfield Town last night.

Byrne, 31, made the move to Valley Parade over the summer from League One new boys Stockport County. He penned a two-year deal with the Yorkshire outfit and has since made eight appearances in all competitions for his new team, six of which have come in the league.

In this latest selection update regarding his condition, the Telegraph & Argus report he is poised for two weeks on the sidelines which isn’t ideal. In addition, Ciaran Kelly has an appointment today on his injured ankle.

Bradford City signed Byrne to add more experience and competition to their backline.

He has played over 450 games in his career to date and will be itching to get back out on the pitch when his spell in the treatment room ends.

The former Republic of Ireland youth international moved over to England as a youngster and started out at Nottingham Forest.

He has since had stints at Rochdale, Barrow, Southport, AFC Telford United, Macclesfield Town, Gateshead, AFC Fylde, FC Halifax Town, Hartlepool United, Tranmere Rovers and Stockport County.

The latter snapped him up in January 2023 and he was a useful player for Dave Challinor’s side.

Byrne helped the Hatters win the title last term but his game time would have dried up in the third tier, hence why he was allowed to head out the exit door.

After joining Bradford City, he told their website: “I am delighted to be here. When I first heard about the interest from Bradford City and the manager, it was a move I really wanted to happen and get over the line.

“I have spoken with the gaffer and we both have the same ambitions: to try and achieve what we did last year at Stockport, and bring this massive football club back up to League One.

“The key is to maintain that momentum that Bradford ended the season with, going into next season, and just keep kicking on with good standards.

“We need to try to get this fanbase behind us from the start of the season, while keeping them entertained and push for promotion. I am really looking forward to putting the shirt on.”

What now?

The Bantams are expected to be without Byrne for their next few games at least now.

They face AFC Wimbledon this weekend before fixtures against Harrogate Town and Morecambe.
