Liverpool defenders Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk both scored to help the Reds beat AC Milan in the Champions League.

Christian Pulisic gave AC Milan an early lead at the San Siro, but Konate and Van Dijk both headed past Mike Maignan to complete a first-half comeback from Liverpool.

Konate stood out for Liverpool, who scored a third in the second half through Dominik Szoboszlai to secure a 3-1 win.

It was a fine evening for Arne Slot and everyone associated with the Anfield club, with a bonus coming in the form of a Federico Chiesa Liverpool debut.

His fellow attackers could, however, have made it a more comfortable night for the defence had they been more clinical in the final third.

The central defensive duo will be delighted with their goals and the result, but perhaps also with their new club record, with BBC Sport reporting that it was the first time Liverpool have had two defenders score in the same Champions League match.

Van Dijk and Konate have enjoyed very strong starts to the new season, with the latter impressing after being initially overlooked for Jarell Quansah.

The 1-0 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest was undoubtedly a major disappointment, but they have now put that nightmare behind them thanks to the win in Milan.

Premier League action now returns to Anfield as Liverpool host Bournemouth on Saturday, with the home supporters perhaps still wanting to see another positive reaction from Slot and his players.

The Dutchman now has the challenge of managing his players, with another new competition in the League Cup arriving immediately after the visit of the Cherries.

West Ham travel to Anfield for that midweek cup clash, with the fixtures continuing to come thick and fast as the Reds head to Wolves in league action before the month is over.
