Nottingham Forest beat Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield last weekend to maintain an unbeaten start to the 2024/25 campaign.

Callum Hudson-Odoi scored the only goal of the game and the performance of the whole team was remarkable.

Forest defender Ola Aina was praised by Ian Wright and Alex Moreno was also fantastic in the other full-back position.

The Reds’ win was built on a solid rearguard and maximum commitment from a well-organised side assembled by Nuno Espirito Santo.

Forest roared back to form following the international break having been forced to settle for a draw in a home game with Wolves prior to the interval.

Charlie McParland blown away by Chris Wood

The Forest striker was in action on Saturday from the off, despite only getting back from international duty with New Zealand two days previous.

The All Whites had played in America on Wednesday and it meant a tight turnaround for the man with two goals to his name this season.

Wood is defying the criticism at Forest though and is the in-form striker since Espirito Santo came to the club in December.

McParland is a huge fan of the talisman and has praised his efforts against Liverpool.

He told Team Talk on Notts TV: “I think Chris Wood, he did unbelievable at Liverpool. We had others say he should have been rested because of international duty. He started, did his bit and came off. He was great.”

Wood is vitally important to Forest

At 32, the talismanic striker isn’t going to be around forever – and this could well be his final season at the City Ground.

However, he’s got the backing of Espirito Santo and his goals last season kept Forest in the Premier League.

Wood isn’t every supporter’s cup of team but it’s hard to knock what he’s achieved over the last 12 months or so at Forest.

McParland is right to give him praise. He risked injury by playing against Liverpool when he would have surely been feeling the effects of a long flight from the USA.

Wood must not continue delivering the goods and ensure that Forest don’t live to rue the decision not to sign another striker in the summer.
