Chesterfield defender Ash Palmer has said he ‘wants’ to stay beyond this season.

Chesterfield have a decision to make regarding the future of the centre-back. His contract with the League Two side expires in late June.

Palmer, 32, is due to become a free agent this summer as things stand. He has made six appearances so far this season.

He has said, as per a report by the Derbyshire Times: “There are quite a lot of people in the same boat as me. The club is on the up, everyone wants to be here. Everyone is playing for a contract.”

He added: “I am doing alright, it has been a frustrating start to the season for me, and the team as well, we have not done as well as we wanted to. I have watched a lot of football, sulked a lot. I waited patiently for my chance, got fit, and hopefully I am doing okay.

“It was the first long-term injury of my career so in that sense I have been quite fortunate up to now. It is not nice to get injured but I am not the first and I won’t be the last. It is all part of the game and you have to build your character.”

Chesterfield’s Ash Palmer wants new contract

Chesterfield signed Palmer back in 2022 to boost their defensive department.

He gives Paul Cook a solid option to pick from at the back and injects experience into his squad.

The ex-England C international helped the Spirerites gain promotion from the National League last year along with Bromley.

Palmer was on the books at Barnsley and Scunthorpe United as a youngster before dropping into non-league.

He had spells at Hinckley United, Droylsden, Buxton, North Ferriby United and Guiseley before Stockport County came calling.

The Yorkshireman became a key player for the Hatters and helped them rise from the National League North to the Football League during his time at Edgeley Park.

Palmer played 185 games in all competitions for the North West club and chipped in with 19 goals before heading out the exit door.

Will Ash Palmer stay at Chesterfield?

It remains to be seen whether Chesterfield hand Palmer an extension or let him leave for nothing.

He has had his injury issues over recent times and hasn’t played as many games as he would have wanted to so far this term.
