Oldham Athletic are poised to sign Otis Khan following his exit from Grimsby Town, according to a report by The Oldham Times.
Grimsby Town made the decision to cut ties with the winger at the end of last season when his contract expired. He has been available since late June and has been weighing up his next move in the game.
Khan, 28, joined the Mariners in 2022 and made 52 appearances in all competitions, chipping in with six goals. He joined Hartlepool United on loan in the last January transfer window but played only once for the Pools before heading back to Blundell Park.
In this latest update regarding his situation by The Oldham Times, he is set to join Oldham Athletic on a permanent basis under former Tranmere Rovers boss Micky Mellon. He has been on trial with the National League outfit over recent times and has done enough to earn a deal.
New move for departed Grimsby Town man
Grimsby Town landed Khan a couple of years ago following their promotion back to the Football League.
He was brought in by the Mariners to add more competition and depth to their attacking department.
The Manchester-born man was a hit during his first year but saw his game time dry up in the last campaign, hence why he was allowed to head out the exit door on a temporary basis when Hartlepool United came calling.
Khan wasn’t the only player to part ways with Grimsby Town this summer. They also released Harvey Tomlinson, Edwin Essel, Aaron Braithwaite, Jamie Bramwell, Niall Maher, Anthony Glennon, Abo Eisa, Arthur Gnahoua, Gavan Holohan and Danny Amos.
He started his career at Manchester United before switching to Sheffield United as a youngster in 2012.
The Pakistan international played twice for the Blades’ first-team and was loaned out by the South Yorkshire outfit to Buxton, Matlock Town and Barrow to get some experience.
Khan then had spells at Barnsley, Yeovil Town, Newport County, Tranmere Rovers, Walsall and Leyton Orient.
What next for ex-Grimsby Town man?
He has travelled around a lot over recent times so should try and lay down some roots at Oldham Athletic.
Khan grew up not too far away from Oldham in Ashton-under-Lyne so will be moving closer to home which could do him good.
Mellon will be hoping that this is the year that the Latics can claw themselves out of the fifth tier.
