Sunderland gave goalkeeper Alex Bass the green light to head out the exit door on a permanent basis over the summer.

Sunderland signed the stopper back in 2022 and handed him a three-year deal. Therefore, he still had another 12 months left on his contract with the Championship club.

Bass, 26, was down the pecking order at the Stadium of Light though and his chances of breaking into the Black Cats’ first-team ahead of Anthony Patterson were very slim. Regis Le Bris’ side also ended up bringing in the experienced Simon Moore as back-up between the sticks as well.

The Eastleigh-born man’s departure suited all parties involved. He played only two cup appearances during his time in the North East and had been loaned out to AFC Wimbledon.

Notts County swooped to sign him in mid-June and he committed his future until 2027 with the League Two side.

New challenge

Bass’ switch to Meadow Lane has provided him with a new challenge to sink his teeth into.

He linked up with a Notts County side who had the worst defensive record in the fourth tier in the last campaign.

Their main focus over pre-season was tightening things up at the back under manager Stuart Maynard.

They have since started this season really well and find themselves 4th in the table behind Barrow, Gillingham and Walsall.

Bass has made the number one spot his own with the Magpies which is what he would have wanted to when he first signed for them.

He has made seven appearances in the league and has kept two clean sheets, conceding seven goals.

Promotion is the aim for Notts County this term and they will hope their new stopper can continue his solid form.

Bass rose up through the academy at Portsmouth and was a regular for them at various different youth levels.

He went on to make 41 outings for the first-team at Fratton Park, as well as having loan spells away at Salisbury, Torquay United, Southend United and Bradford City, before Sunderland signed him.

What now?

Cutting ties with Bass freed up space and funds in the Black Cats’ ranks. They have since lost only once so far this season under Le Bris and face Watford away this weekend.

As for Notts County, they face a trip to Morecambe on Saturday.
