West Brom let Reyes Cleary head out the exit door on loan in the last transfer window when Walsall came calling.

West Brom gave the striker the green light to link up with the League Two side to get some experience under his belt.

Cleary, 20, linked up with the Saddlers on a season-long loan and is due to return to The Hawthorns next summer. He was handed a new one-year deal by the Baggies this past summer, with the club holding an option for a further 12 months on top of that.

The ex-England youth international has had to be patient for his opportunity with Mat Sadler’s side. They are currently sat in 2nd place in the fourth tier table behind Port Vale as they eye promotion to League One.

Walsall were in Bristol Street Motors Trophy action last night against Shrewsbury Town and won 3-0 with Cleary on the scoresheet. Birmingham City loanee George Hall scored their other two goals.

How is Reyes Cleary faring away from West Brom?

Cleary’s switch to Walsall seemed to suit all parties involved. He wasn’t moving far away from home and moving down a couple of leagues appeared to be the best opportunity for him to get regular game time to boost his development.

However, things haven’t quite gone to plan for him so far. His goal against Shrewsbury Town in the cup on Tuesday evening was his first for the Saddlers.

The attacker has had to bide his time for minutes and he has mainly provided back-up for Sadler’s side.

Cleary has made seven appearances for Walsall since joining them in all competitions and has only found the net once.

He didn’t make their squad in their last five league outings but will hope he is back in their plans now after their win over Shrewsbury Town.

After signing him for Walsall, Sadler said: “He’s a very good finisher, very direct. He wants to get at people and gives us a different attacking outlet which is what I talk about all the time, having different weapons in the game to be able to beat teams in different ways and he does that.”

West Brom career so far

Cleary has been on the books at West Brom for his whole career to date and has risen up through their academy.

He was a regular for the Baggies at various different youth levels and has played seven times for their first-team to date.

They may have a decision to make in January if he isn’t getting into Walsall’s team.
