Swindon Town, Doncaster Rovers and Newport County want to sign Boston United defender Jai Rowe, according to reporter Pete O’Rourke on X.

The League Two trio are all being linked with a swoop for the non-league man this summer as they look to bolster their respective ranks. Rowe, 22, has recently helped his current side gain promotion from the National League North into the National League after their play-off win over Brackley Town.

Rowe, who is from Nuneaton, is facing an uncertain future at the Jakemans Community Stadium though with his contract up at the end of next month. He has been offered a new deal, as detailed on the club’s retained list, but is yet to sign it.

In this latest update regarding his situation by journalist O’Rourke on X, he has emerged on the radar of Swindon Town, Doncaster Rovers and Newport County. He has a decision to make amid interest from the Football League.

Who is this?

O’Rourke claimed on X last month that Dundee United and Shrewsbury Town were eyeing a move for Rowe. However, the latter’s manager Paul Hurst cooled his side’s links to him and told  BBC Sport Shropshire: “He was at Scunthorpe in an Under-21’s group that the club were trying to sort out experiment with there. I know the player, you will hear me say this a lot to you, don’t believe everything you read or hear. Whether it is a lazy link, whether it is an agent doing his job.”

Rowe started his career with spells at Nuneaton Borough and Barwell before he moved to Glanford Park to join Scunthorpe United.

He went on to play 92 times for the Iron as a youngster and played for them in the Football League before their relegation to the fifth tier in 2022.

Rowe spent the first-half of last term with Scunthorpe again before ending the campaign at Aldershot Town.

Boston United then snapped him up last summer and he has been a key player for the Pilgrims.

He made 34 appearances in all competitions in this past campaign and chipped in with five goals and one assist.

What next?

Doncaster Rovers will be aiming for promotion to League One again under Grant McCann after losing to Crewe Alexandra in the play-offs and could see Rowe as someone to add more competition and depth to their ranks.

As for Swindon Town and Newport County, they both had disappointing 2023/24 seasons and could do with adding some more new faces to their ranks to improve their respective squads.
