Wigan Athletic launch bid for League Two captain

Wigan Athletic have made a bid for Fleetwood Town captain Brendan Wiredu, according to reporter Pete O’Rourke.
Wigan Athletic will be hoping for a stronger second half of the season after failing to build on last season’s solid campaign.
The Latics fought back from a points deduction under Shaun Maloney in 2023/24 and were backed to kick on from there this time around. However, they currently sit 17th in the League One table with 27 points to their name from 23 games, leaving them seven points clear of the drop and 14 off the top six.
Winter business will be key to their bid to rising up the third-tier table and now, news of a fresh bid has emerged.
Writing on X, reporter Pete O’Rourke states that Wigan Athletic have lodged an offer for defender Brendan Wiredu. It is not said how much has been tabled at this stage, nor how Fleetwood Town have responded.
Wiredu signed a new contract in January last year and has been linked with a move away from the League Two side before. He’s under contract until the summer of 2026 as it stands and cuts a key figure at Highbury Stadium.
More on Wiredu
Former Charlton Athletic youth prospect Wiredu has been on the books at Fleetwood Town since 2022, making the move after becoming a standout player at Colchester United.
The Wigan Athletic target has moved into a defensive role permanently in recent seasons but he has previously found joy in midfield too. His physical profile makes him a real asset, but he combines that with valuable leadership too, while his time in midfield makes him a solid presence on the ball too.
Wiredu has mainly played in League One but he does have experience in the third-tier as well. He has appeared 73 times in the division, which should allay any concerns about whether he can make the step up.
Wigan Athletic’s defensive options
Maloney could do with his Wigan Athletic defensive ranks being bolstered this month, hence the bid for League Two skipper Wiredu.
They currently have Jason Kerr and Will Aimson as their options in the middle. James Carragher is the main cover while Toby Sibbick, who is being used at right-back, can play centrally too.
Luke Chambers remains on the books too, but he is sidelined. The addition of Wired would be a very welcome one, but time will tell if the bid comes to anything more serious.
