Real Madrid midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni (24) is set to captain France against Israel in Friday’s UEFA Nations League fixture, as confirmed by the FFF.

In the absence of captain Kylian Mbappé, it will be Tchouaméni who leads Les Bleus. The former Paris Saint-Germain forward has been allowed to remain with his new club, Real Madrid, as he works his way back to full fitness following an injury. His omission from Didier Deschamps squad has been the source of controversy and debate in France in recent days.

Ordinarily, it would be the vice-captain who would inherit the armband, however, France’s vice-captain, Antoine Griezmann, announced his international retirement just before the international break. Tchouaméni was competing with Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konaté and Barcelona’s Jules Koundé for the captaincy, as per RMC Sport.

However, Deschamps has decided to name former AS Monaco midfielder Tchouaméni as his captain for Les Bleus’ upcoming fixture. He has 36 caps for France since making his debut in September 2021.
