Lucas Chevalier (22) has been on the verge of a France call-up for some time. A regular at U21 level, the Lille OSC goalkeeper has once again impressed consistently this season and put in an outstanding display in LOSC’s 1-0 victory over Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League on the eve of Didier Deschamps announcing his France squad.

However, Chevalier was once again absent. Following Hugo Lloris’ retirement from international football, Mike Maignan has inherited the No.1 jersey, whilst the hierarchy behind him has also been settled. RC Lens’ Brice Samba is the uncontested No.2, whilst West Ham United’s Alphonse Areola is a frequent pick at No.3.

It was thought that, given the consistency of 22-year-old Chevalier, the Lille goalkeeper may have forced his way into Deschamps’ plans for the upcoming international break. Whilst absent from the list, Deschamps stated that Chevalier is nearing a first call-up.

“He’s getting closer and closer [to a call-up],” said Deschamps in a press conference announcing his squad. “I didn’t need last night’s match to know about his potential. It will come sooner or later. It means that the three goalkeepers with us (Maignan, Samba, Areola), have to maintain their level.”
