Liverpool moved further clear at the top of the Premier League table after beating Leicester on Boxing Day.

The Reds certainly had a fight on their hands against the Foxes, but came through a testing evening to sit seven points pretty.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side made things difficult for Liverpool, even going ahead through an early Jordan Ayew goal.

But Leicester could not hold out at a foggy Anfield, with a late first-half goal from Cody Gakpo changing the tide of the game.

From there, Liverpool took control. Curtis Jones struck just after half-time, with Mohamed Salah adding a lovely third late on.

There was just one blot on the Arne Slot copybook on Thursday, however, after a frustrating late cameo from Dominik Szoboszlai.

Dominik Szoboszlai set to miss West Ham visit

Szoboszlai was excellent against Tottenham last weekend, grabbing himself a goal and an assist.

After such a lung-busting effort, though, it was not a huge surprise to see the Hungarian rested against Leicester.

One other reason for Slot deciding not to play Szoboszlai was that the 24-year-old was one booking away from a suspension.

Unfortunately, Szoboszlai could not avoid a caution despite playing just 12 minutes.

And as per Amazon Prime Sport commentator Jon Champion, that will see Liverpool’s No.8 miss Sunday’s visit to West Ham.

“One of reasons he didn’t start tonight is they wanted to protect him,” Champion said. “But he’s going to miss the game against West Ham now.”

Who will play instead of Szoboszlai?

This will certainly have been a frustration for Slot. Part of the reason to start Jones over Szoboszlai would have been with that potential suspension in mind.

Nevertheless, Jones showed that he can ably step into the breach with his all-important second goal against Leicester.

It actually was not the Liverpool academy graduate’s best game up until then, as he looked just a little slow and sluggish with the ball.

But Jones has been doing the business recently and Slot will have no issue sticking him back in at the London Stadium.

Frustrating for Dom, but Liverpool are well stocked regardless.
