Liverpool came away 6-3 winners against Tottenham on Sunday, with Arne Slot ensuring the Reds will be top of the Premier League at Christmas.
Although Liverpool’s historic record of going on to win the title despite being top at Christmas doesn’t make for the best of reading, there’s no denying that the Dutch coach has been a revelation for the Merseyside giants this season.
Mohamed Salah broke yet another Premier League record against Tottenham as the winger became Liverpool’s outright fourth-leading goalscorer in history, with Peter Schmeichel backing the Reds to compete for the quadruple in 2025.
Yet Liverpool’s win against Tottenham might have unearthed a way to transform one player into a superstar under Slot.
Slot might have cracked the code on how to use Dominik Szoboszlai
Dominik Szoboszlai scored and assisted against Tottenham in one of the Hungarian midfielder’s best performances yet for Liverpool, with the 23-year-old causing the north London side multiple problems throughout the entire game.
With Glenn Murray noting that Szoboszlai acted as a false nine for Liverpool, this role seemingly got the best out of the former RB Leipzig maestro, with the youngster constantly on the ball for the Reds and creating havoc in the Spurs’ penalty area.

Indeed, it wasn’t just Murray who was impressed with the Liverpool no. 8’s performance, with Alexis Mac Allister showering Szoboszlai with praise as Hungarian teammate and AFC Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez also hailing his fellow countryman on social media.
Given how underwhelming Szoboszlai’s output has been for Liverpool since joining last year, the midfielder’s display against Tottenham was one to remember for the youngster, and the role Slot gave the former Bundesliga star could the beginning of something incredible for the 23-year-old.
Szoboszlai knows he needs to build from Tottenham performance
With three goals and four assists in all competitions this season, Szoboszlai is already four goal contributions off his overall tally last year for Liverpool, with Sundays showing against Tottenham potentially the start of something new for the midfield maestro.
And with two games left to go before the start of 2025, Szoboszlai knows he needs to build from his display on Sunday in north London if he’s to really show the world that he’s turned a new corner and that he can become a superstar for Liverpool.
All the talent is there for Szoboszlai to become one of the best midfielders in the world, and heading into the New Year, this new role could be what the Hungarian international grows into on his path to becoming the player many Liverpool fans expect the youngster to become.
