'Barking at him': What Darwin Nunez did vs Southampton that left Liverpool coaches 'furious' - journalist

Liverpool secured an important 2-1 win against Southampton to advance in the League Cup, with Darwin Nunez on the scoresheet for the Reds.
The Uruguay international ended an eight-game goalscoring draught as Nunez beautifully controlled a botched Jan Bednarek clearance to cooly slot the ball past Alex McCarthy to give Liverpool the lead.
With Jamie Carragher predicting Nunez to be sold next summer by Liverpool, the striker needs to start scoring goals if he’s to remain at Anfield beyond this season, with the pressure starting to mount for the former Benfica star.
Yet even after scoring, Nunez managed to do something that annoyed Liverpool’s coaches.
Liverpool coaches fuming with Nunez after failing to defend a Southampton throw-in
As spotted by the Daily Mail’s Lewis Steele, stand-in manager Sipke Hulshoff and coach Aaron Briggs were both ‘furious’ with Nunez after failing to defend a Southampton throw-in, with the attacker urged to get inside the penalty area.
Steele posted on Twitter: “Aaron Briggs and Sipke Hulshoff on touchline furious with Darwin Nunez. They were barking at him to get into the penalty area and defend that long throw by the looks.”

With Nunez’s goal tally for the season now up to four, the striker getting on the bad side of Liverpool’s coaches even after scoring is the last thing the Uruguay international would have wanted after finally finding the back of the net for the first time in nearly a month.
And with Arne Slot seeing everything from the stands, Nunez knows he could be in for a telling off post-match, with the attacker aware of the standards the Dutch coach expects from his players.
Nunez knows he needs a miracle to save his Liverpool career
This season was always going to be make-or-break for Nunez after two somewhat disappointing years under Jurgen Klopp, with the attacker yet to justify his transfer fee having arrived from Benfica in 2022 for £65m.
And with just four goals to his name in all competitions heading into 2025, Nunez knows he needs a miracle if he’s to still be a Liverpool player going into Slot’s second season as manager of the Reds.
Indeed, Nunez has yet to prove he can be the main man up top for Liverpool, and with a goal today, the attacker knows he has to keep his goalscoring form up if he’s to retain a spot in the squad for next season.
