Liverpool had a good day on Saturday as they extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table.

The Reds had a tricky looking away game at Crystal Palace, but managed to get through it with a 1-0 win.

Having initially gone four points clear of Man City and Arsenal in second and third, Liverpool were pegged back as both club won during the 3pm kick-offs.

But at the same time as the Reds were seeing off Palace in the Premier League, a burgeoning talent of the Liverpool academy was celebrating in the Championship.

As ever the Reds have a number of youngsters out on-loan in the second division this season.

Perhaps the most eye-catching of these is young winger Kaide Gordon. And after a torrid time with injuries over the past couple of seasons, Gordon hit the front with his first goal in almost three years on Saturday.

Kaide Gordon celebrates birthday goal

Gordon has long been seen as a big talent at Liverpool. Had it not been for injuries, the former Derby prospect may have been a first-team regular by now.

Jurgen Klopp saw huge potential in Gordon and introduced him to the Liverpool squad in 2021/22.

The then 17-year-old bagged his first ever professional goal not long after, striking at Anfield in the FA Cup in January 2022.

Back then, it seemed impossible that Gordon would have to wait nearly three years to find the net in senior football again.

But having worked his way back from fitness issue after fitness issue, that is exactly what happened. With the door closed at Liverpool for now, Gordon joined Norwich on-loan over the summer. And on Saturday, his 20th birthday, he fired home the Canaries’ third goal in a 4-0 win over Hull.

After all the frustration it was a big goal for Gordon and he celebrated it with a post on Instagram after the game.

“Birthday. First Championship goal. Three points. See you after international,” wrote the youngster, adding a tick after each point.

As you might expect, his Liverpool teammates were in the comments, delighted to see Kaide thriving on-loan. “Yessir,” wrote Cody Gakpo, with Tyler Morton adding a “quality mate.”

Were other Reds in action?

It was great to see Gordon get his goal after such a struggle of a two seasons. Hopefully he can use that as a springboard to get force his way into the team as a starter.

In three appearances for Norwich so far Gordon is yet to start in the Championship.

Elsewhere in the second division Lewis Koumas started again for Stoke and played 54 minutes of a 0-0 draw with Swansea, while Ben Doak played over an hour for Middlesbrough as they lost to Watford.

Nat Phillips also played the final 15 minutes of Derby’s win against QPR.

Down in League One and Luke Chambers was back to full fitness, playing 90 minutes as Wigan drew 0-0 with Stockport County.
