Liverpool moved eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table on Sunday with a comeback victory over Southampton.

The Reds were heavy favourites to win heading into the match, with their opponents sitting bottom of the pile.

However, Southampton made Liverpool’s life difficult at St Mary’s, overturning Dominik Szoboszlai’s goal to lead 2-1 with 25 minutes left.

After seeing Manchester City get walloped by Tottenham on Saturday, it looked like the Reds were going to miss the chance to build a big lead in the Premier League title race.

Then, just as he has so often done for Liverpool, Mohamed Salah rode to the rescue. Salah’s late double turned the game on its head again to send a massive three points back with the Reds to Merseyside.

Salah has earnt rightful praise following the final whistle, but speaking in his post-match press conference, Arne Slot also hailed the part Ryan Gravenberch played in Liverpool coming back.

Arne Slot hails Ryan Gravenberch pass

For a time in the second-half at Southampton it had looked as though Liverpool were going to come undone.

Mateus Fernandes deservedly put the hosts into the lead and the Reds felt rattled.

Then, almost out of nowhere, Salah nipped in behind the Southampton defence and wrongfooted goalkeeper Alex McCarthy with his touch. 1-1.

And while Salah deserves the praise that will come his way, Slot made sure to highlight Gravenberch’s key assist as well.

“After we went 2-1 down I didn’t feel that was the moment we should score,” explained the Liverpool head coach.

“But out of a fantastic pass from Gravenberch, then the timing of the run and the way Mo finished it was special and that helped us back in the game.

“We needed that goal to play the last 25 minutes that we played and for me it was a matter of time before we scored [again].”

Ryan Gravenberch stands out

Salah was inevitably given the man of the match award by Jamie Carragher on Sunday.

After his two-goal, match-winning turn it is hard to argue that the Egyptian did not deserve it.

But it’s also fair to say that Gravenberch ran him a close second. On a day where other members of the Liverpool squad failed to spark, the Dutch midfielder was his usual composed self.

Gravenberch’s key pass for Salah was the game’s biggest turning point and coming with 25 minutes still to play it gave the Reds the foothold they needed.

The £34m signing has been a revelation for Slot this season and it’s nice to hear the boss give his compatriot a shoutout after another standout display.
