Liverpool are in the market for a new left-back, with Alphonso Davies one of the players who has emerged as a target for the Reds.

The Bayern Munich superstar is regarded as one of the best fullbacks in the world, with the 24-year-old defender captain of Canada and noted for his electric pace and dribbling abilities when on the ball.

With Liverpool interested in signing Davies, who is currently due to become a free-agent at the end of this season, the former Vancouver Whitecaps star would be quite an upgrade on the likes of Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas, two players Jamie Carragher has said could do with replacing.

Yet Liverpool have today suffered a major blow in their bid to sign Davies this year.

Liverpool target Davies close to signing new Bayern Munich contract

According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Davies is on the verge of signing a new contract with Bayern, with talks with the German giants and the defender’s agent scheduled to take place in Munich later this week.

Plettenberg posted: “As exclusively revealed in December: Alphonso Davies, on the verge of extending his contract with FC Bayern long-term. Important talks with his agent Nick Huoseh scheduled this week in Munich. Bayern want to enter the final stage now.”

Liverpool were always unlikely to sign Davies due to the Canadian superstar’s sky-high wage demands, with the defender already earning close to £10m-a-year with Bayern, a figure that not even Trent Alexander-Arnold makes on his current deal.

Indeed, with Liverpool struggling to agree new contracts with Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, striking a pre-contract agreement with Davies this January would have been fanciful, to say the least.

What other left-backs have Liverpool been linked with?

Left-back is one of four positions Liverpool are looking to recruit for in 2025, with Davies’ decision to remain at Bayern one that could make things easier for the Reds to identify their top target for the role.

AFC Bournemouth star Milos Kerkez has emerged as a real contender for Liverpool with the Hungary international once again impressing in the Premier League under Andoni Iraola, who have dreams of a European finish in the second-half of the season.

As well as Kerkez, Liverpool have been rumored with a move for Fulham star Antonee Robinson, who this season has arguably been the best left-back in the Premier League with the Cottagers, who will be resigned to losing the 27-year-old this year.
