'How dare he': Alan Shearer jokes Mo Salah did something 'terrible' vs Lille before making Liverpool history
Today at 02:30 AM
Mohamed Salah was back amongst the goals last night for Liverpool as the winger found the back of the net for the first time in four games.
The Egyptian international had endured a tough time of late having failed to score or assist in Liverpool’s last three games heading into last night’s UEFA Champions League tie against LOSC Lille, with Steve McManaman pointing out that Salah’s form had become worrying.
Yet the 32-year-old restored order to the world with a fine goal against Lille, with Stephen Warnock left with egg on his face having criticised Salah just before the former AS Roma superstar opened up the scoring for Liverpool at Anfield.
Despite returning to the scoresheet, not all pundits were too pleased about how long it took Salah to find the back of the net, at least not in a serious sense.
Shearer jokingly slates Salah for going three games without scoring
Speaking on Amazon Prime’s coverage of the match, Premier League legend Alan Shearer jokingly took aim at Salah for failing to score in his last three games before expertly finding the back of the net last night against Lille, even with the forward missing some more golden chances in the match.
Shearer said when asked about Salah ending his mini-goal drought: “Terrible wasn’t it, how dare he! The standards he’s set over the years here are incredible, and that’s what Liverpool needed and wanted, and it was a magnificent finish.”

With Salah himself pleased with Harvey Elliott’s performance against Lille, the Liverpool forward will be thrilled to be back amongst the goals after a disappointing few games for the Reds where things weren’t going the winger’s way.
And with Ipswich Town coming up next for Liverpool at Anfield, Salah could have a real field day against the relegation favourites on Merseyside, with the Egyptian international due another masterclass of a performance.
Salah makes even more Liverpool history after ending goal drought
Salah has been the best forward in the world this season with the 32-year-old well on course to having his best season yet at Liverpool in a campaign that could see the attacker win the Premier League and go the distance in the Champions League.
# | Player | Goals | Appearances |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Mohamed Salah | 50 | 83 |
2 | Steven Gerrard | 41 | 130 |
3 | Sadio Mane | 26 | 58 |
4 | Roberto Firmino | 24 | 73 |
5 | Michael Owen | 22 | 50 |
And last night’s goal against Lille secured Salah even more Liverpool history as the former Chelsea man became the first Red to ever score 50 European goals, with Steven Gerrard the only player to have come close to this record with 41 goals.
Indeed, Salah seems to breaking records every other match this Liverpool this season, and this latest achievement will be one that could take decades to break given how prolific the Anfield no. 11 has been since arriving on Merseyside back in 2017.
