Liverpool have been blessed with some truly top forwards over the years.
Whether it be Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler or Michael Owen – Reds supporters have had the pleasure of witnessing some of English football’s best frontlines.
This was no different in 2014, as Liverpool lined up with the likes of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge.
The pair would strike up a formidable partnership alongside a young Raheem Sterling during the 2013/14 season, with their goalscoring heroics nearly leading the Reds to glory.
Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge broke Liverpool goalscoring record
More recent times have seen Mohamed Salah break records for Liverpool, but in 2014 it was the famed ‘SAS’ partnership ripping up the record book.
The striking duo would rack up a staggering 53 league goals between them – a tally which nearly fired Brendan Rodgers’ side to the Premier League title.
Suarez has been deemed Liverpool’s best-ever striker by some and his exploits during the 13/14 are a large part down to that, with the Uruguayan’s 44 goal contributions going down as one of the most impressive campaigns in Premier League history.
Sturridge also terrorised defences that season, with 22 goals of his own – leaving Jonny Evans to admit he hated playing against the Liverpool pairing.

Daniel Sturridge | 29 | 22 | 7 |
Their goalscoring antics would not only nearly win them the title, it would also break Reds history in the process.
Exactly eleven years ago to the day, Sturridge’s goal against Swansea City meant the Reds pair became the first Liverpool partnership since 1964 to both bag at least 20 league goals in a single season.
Sturridge wished he could have played with Suarez for longer
Sadly for Liverpool fans, the iconic SAS partnership wouldn’t be enough for the Reds to lift the title that season and Suarez would depart Anfield for FC Barcelona that summer.
Sturridge has since reflected on his striking relationship with the Uruguayan, telling Sky Sports in 2023 he wished he played with him for longer.
“We hit it off instantly. We just had that thing where we know where each other would be. It was a joy to play with him. I wish I could have played with him longer because it was only a season and a half,” he said.
“Our partnership was almost like two players who had individual technical abilities to score goals on their own, but could also create for each other. That'’s what probably made us such a good partnership.
“When we played a split diamond [midfield] I’d be all the way over on the right, he’d be all the way over on the left but we’d still look for each other or we’d cause the opposition more problems by doing that. We did [speak about it]. I’d have conversations like, ‘If I see you I’m going to play you [in], if you see me you play me in, round the box we make combinations, we’ve got to make things happen’. That was our mentality.
“We know we have to score goals, that’s our job, so we’ve got to be as creative as we possibly can be. I'd’be right wing, sometimes left wing, he’d be left wing, sometimes right wing, and one of us would be up front depending on the tactics that Brendan [Rodgers] did.
“I felt like with our partnership it was different, and I do include [Raheem] Sterling into it as well, I think Raheem was pivotal in what we were doing at the time. With me and Suarez it was a case of two individual guys with technical abilities that when they combined were causing problems everywhere.”
