'I think': Tony Cascarino says Liverpool should replace Mohamed Salah with 'really good' £6m attacker

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah already has five goals to his name this season after scoring the winner against Wolves.

Salah netted from the penalty spot as Liverpool left Molineux with a 2-1 win to go top of the Premier League table under Arne Slot.

Worryingly, however, Salah could be heading to Saudi Arabia in the very near future, with such a move having long been talked about.

But it is becoming increasingly likely given that the Egyptian will see his Anfield contract expire next summer.

There have been very few signs of an extended deal on Merseyside, meaning Slot may need to start considering a replacement.

Tony Cascarino wants Bryan Mbeumo to replace Mohamed Salah at Liverpool

Federico Chiesa was signed in the summer transfer window, but perhaps the Reds manager will still want another attacker on the books if Salah was to leave.

Another player Liverpool eyed in the summer was Bryan Mbeumo, but the Brentford star remained in West London.

Tony Cascarino is, however, convinced that the Bees star is the right man to replace Salah should the Egyptian move on.

"If Mohamed Salah is in his last year or two at Liverpool, I think Mbeumo should at the top of their list of potential replacements," Cascarino told The Times. "There is so much to like about his game, but one of the things that stands out for me is the fact that he makes the players around him play well.

"If you think back to the 'BMW' attacking trio that helped Brentford to promotion, the other two – Ollie Watkins and Said Benrahma – both got moves to bigger clubs, but Mbeumo has managed to be just as effective with the people who replaced them, whether that's been [Ivan] Toney, or Yoane Wissa, or whoever.

"It reminds me of Teddy Sheringham, who I played with. When people remember Teddy, they think of his partnerships, with Jurgen Klinsmann, with Alan Shearer, with Robbie Keane, with me.

"That is the sign of a really good player but also a guy with a great attitude. Mbeumo for £5.8million from Troyes in 2019 is up there with the best-value transfers of the past decade."

Huge fee likely needed for Liverpool to sign Bryan Mbeumo

The £5.8million fee Brentford paid for Mbeumo really was a steal, although his value has obviously risen sharply since then.

It remains to be seen what price Liverpool would need to pay Brentford to persuade their star man to leave, with a huge transfer fee likely required.

The Bees only just lost Toney to the Saudi Pro League, and are heavily reliant upon Mbeumo going forward, especially now with their injury issues in that area.

But Liverpool could be set for a huge influx of cash should they sell Salah to the Saudi Pro League before his contract expires.

The Egyptian is simply irreplaceable at Anfield, but Mbeumo would represent a fine alternative, with the 25-year-old – who can play out wide and centrally – also on five goals for the season.
