Liverpool face Southampton today in what could be a huge Premier League clash for Arne Slot’s side.

Manchester City’s shock 4-0 loss against Tottenham on Saturday has opened the door for the Reds to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to eight points, with Liverpool facing Pep Guardiola’s side next week at Anfield.

With Guardiola admitting that Liverpool will become Premier League favourites if they beat City next weekend, the Merseyside giants have a huge opportunity to solidify their claim as the leading club to win the top-flight English title.

Yet Slot has hinted that three players could be rested ahead of today’s clash against Southampton.

Slot to ‘keep an eye’ on Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Alexis Mac Allister

Speaking to the press ahead of today’s trip to St. Mary’s, the Liverpool manager noted that he will be keeping tabs on Luis Diaz, Dariwn Nunez and Alexis Mac Allister’s fitness after their returns from international duty in South America.

With Liverpool facing Southampton, Real Madrid and City in the span of seven days, there’s a real chance that Slot could decide to rest the trio this afternoon with two massive games on the horizon for the Reds.

And Slot is aware that he will need to rest Diaz, Nunez and Mac Allister, with the Dutch coach saying: “I will particularly keep an eye on the players that have come back from South America, and that is not only Macca, it's also Darwin and Lucho.

“You have to keep an eye on them, especially the ones who played twice for 90 minutes. You see how they are doing, how fit they are, you talk to them a bit more about how they feel, more than I do with the ones who played in Europe.”

Slot needs to take risks with rotating Liverpool’s squad

Slot is regarded as a manager who likes to keep his squad small and to rotate only a select few players who he truly trusts, with Liverpool seeing the benefits of this greatly with the likes of Kostas Tsimikas and Curtis Jones.

Yet the next seven days will see Slot take some risks with rotating that could be unfavourable with Liverpool fans, with today’s tie against Southampton one that could see a number of surprises in the XI.

Indeed, Liverpool have the squad to get through this run of fixtures with maximum points, and the Reds will be pushed to their limits if they’re to maintain their Premier League and UEFA Champions League form.
