Liverpool could now have the chance to put right £63m transfer mistake from 2022 and have to take it - opinion

2025 could end up being a very interesting year indeed for Liverpool.

The Reds have put themselves in a great position in both the Premier League and the Champions League and are smelling a potentially special season.

Away from the action on the pitch, it could also be the year that Liverpool lose Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Reds supporters will be hoping that is not the case, but as the New Year approaches at Anfield, nothing is sorted in that respect.

Finally, 2025 promises to be a big 12 months in the transfer window for Liverpool. Arne Slot is set to truly make his mark on the Liverpool squad with some new additions of his own.

As journalist Graeme Bailey exclusively told Rousing The Kop this week, Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak is on Liverpool’s radar as one potential signing. Should the Reds push for Isak, they can correct a transfer mistake from three years ago.

Liverpool should have signed Alexander Isak in 2022

Isak’s name should have been familiar to Liverpool fans long before he moved to the Premier League in 2022.

Reports suggested that Liverpool wanted to sign Isak all the way back in 2021.

Jurgen Klopp was clearly on the lookout for a new striker as he aimed to move on from the legendary trio of Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

In the end, Liverpool moved early in June 2022 to secure the signing of Darwin Nunez for a whopping £64m. That was just three months after claims that Liverpool had a bid turned down for Isak.

Given that Isak subsequently moved to Newcastle for a reported fee of £63m late in August, it stands to reason that the Reds simply preferred Nunez over the Swede.

There are clear reasons for that, of course, and Nunez has been a good signing for Liverpool in his own way.

But since his arrival at Newcastle – and in particular since 2023 – Isak has shown that he could have been the ideal man to lead the line at Anfield. With doubt surrounding a contract extension at Newcastle, Liverpool have the chance to correct their mistake.

Darwin Nunez and Alexander Isak can play together

Suggesting that Liverpool should have bought Isak is not to say that there is no room for Nunez at the club.

Obviously, in the current Slot system, it is unlikely that we would see these two players starting alongside each other.

However, in certain games, perhaps Liverpool could benefit from their differing skillsets. As a player who likes to drops a little deeper, Isak could play in the more advanced midfield role should the Reds be on the hunt for a goal.

With Nunez up ahead of him, Liverpool would carry enormous goal scoring threat.

Clearly, though, someone would have to make way for Isak. And if it is not to be Nunez, then time would almost certainly be up for Diogo Jota.

We don’t necessarily want to see that happen either, but if Isak is really on the market, then Liverpool need to jump at the chance to correct their error of three years ago.
