Liverpool have issued a statement addressing fears the huge Premier League clash against Manchester United at Anfield could be postponed due to the weather.

Several areas of the UK have been hit by amber weather warnings after snow and freezing rain overnight.

Runways at Manchester and Liverpool airports were closed on Sunday morning while teams worked to clear the snow.

One amber warning – which are more serious than yellow warnings and indicate a possible risk to list – covers the Midlands up to Manchester, around 30 miles from the venue of Saturday’s Premier League fixture between Liverpool and Man United.

The Met Office warned ice would be a hazard in places across the UK throughout Sunday, leading to concerns over fan safety for supporters travelling to and from games across the country.

In a statement released on Sunday morning, Liverpool said ‘every effort was being made to get the game on’.

‘A safety meeting was held this morning to assess the weather and travel conditions for today's fixture against Manchester United at Anfield,’ the statement read.

‘At this stage the match is planned to go ahead as normal and every effort is being made to get the game on.

‘A further safety meeting will take place again at midday to assess the latest conditions.

‘We will update supporters just as soon as we can. Please take extra care out there, Reds.’

Last month’s Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool at Goodison Park was postponed on safety grounds because of severe weather caused by Storm Darragh.

Liverpool are currently five points clear at the top of the Premier League having lost just once under Arne Slot, who arrived at Anfield last summer as Jurgen Klopp’s replacement.

The Reds are bidding to win the league for the first time since the 2019-20 season when they celebrated the achievement in front of no fans due to Covid-19.

Manchester United, meanwhile, are just 14th in the Premier League and appear to have got even worse since Ruben Amorim replaced sacked manager Erik ten Hag in November.

The Red Devils have lost four games in a row to slip 14 points outside the Champions League places and just seven points above the relegation zone.

Discussing his team’s struggles before their trip to Anfield, Amorim said: ‘They are anxious, sometimes afraid on the pitch. We have to cope with that.

‘You can see in my face, you can compare it to the way when I arrive and now.

‘Of course there is a lot of pressure. For me, it’s the pride and also the performance. It’s harder when we don’t perform well.’
