Liverpool should pounce as 'outstanding' £50m player set to be available for free in less than a week - opinion

With the January transfer window less than a week away, it remains to be seen if Liverpool decide to make any changes to their squad.
Most of their players are flying high under Arne Slot and have taken to their new manager’s philosophy like a duck to water.
The Reds have quality and quantity in most positions, but as we’ve seen over the years, they’ve always pounced when a market opportunity presented itself.
And if reports are to be believed, one such opportunity is days away from being served on a platter for Liverpool.
Barcelona’s Dani Olmo days away from becoming a free agent
Barcelona’s dire financial situation over the past few years is well documented, with the club actually pulling several economic levers to stay afloat under Joan Laporta.
That hasn’t stopped them from splurging in the transfer market, though, as they parted with around £50m to sign Dani Olmo from RB Leipzig last summer.
The Spaniard graduated from La Masia and enjoyed a fantastic summer with Spain as they won Euro 2024 under Luis de la Fuente’s leadership.
At the time, Barcelona didn’t have any space in the squad for him, but they decided to de-register Andreas Christensen for the time being as he picked up an injury that would keep him out of the first half of the season.
Now, the Danish defender is on the comeback trail, throwing a spanner into the works of Olmo’s future.
The Catalan giants sought a court order to prolong his registration, but Mundo Deportivo report that it has been rejected, with Barcelona left with less than a week to come up with a solution or run the risk of losing the player for free.
Olmo has been described as an ‘outstanding’ player by Julian Nagelsmann and his future will undoubtedly be a big talking point over the next few days.
Liverpool should pounce if Olmo is forced to leave
Liverpool were linked with Olmo before he moved to Barcelona, making this an interesting opportunity for them.
If they were willing to part with top dollar for a player in January and he suddenly becomes available on a free transfer less than six months later, there will be an obvious temptation to at least test the waters over a potential transfer.
Olmo can play in several positions across the front line, but more than anything, he’d be a market opportunity and a half for Liverpool as he’s a supremely talented player with his prime well ahead of him.
Michael Edwards and the Liverpool hierarchy sniff out such deals from a distance, so don’t be surprised if they are keenly following the developments of Olmo’s ongoing saga with Barcelona.
