New £275k a week Premier League arrival shows why Liverpool will struggle to compete under Arne Slot - opinion

It is well known that Liverpool have taken a more measured approach to the transfer market in recent years.

The arrival of Fenway Sports Group on Merseyside in 2010 has resulted in the Reds returning to the top of the European game, but they have achieved this in a different manner to most of their competitors.

Clubs such as Chelsea, Man City and Man United have flexed their financial might across recent transfer windows, while Liverpool will spend very little in a window if they don’t identify a player who can improve their squad – the 2024 summer transfer window being a prime example.

Arne Slot addressed Liverpool’s transfer situation during his press conference on Friday, but the Dutch coach is aware that if he really wants a player, the club’s owners will do their best to bring him to Anfield.

Man City have been the Merseyside club’s biggest rivals over the seven years and despite the Premier League champions languishing down sixth place, the Manchester club have made big moves over the last two weeks.

Omar Marmoush to earn around £257k a week at Man City

Heading into the January transfer window, Eintracht Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush was a star Liverpool were monitoring as the forward has been in the form of his life throughout the 2024/25 campaign.

The Egyptian talent has produced 20 goals and 14 assists across 26 games for the German club, which attracted Man City to the player.

Marmoush is set to join the Manchester club in the coming days after they agreed to pay Frankfurt £67.5m, including bonuses, for his services.

According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, the 25-year-old will earn between £260,000 and £275,000 a week before tax at the Etihad Stadium, which is a massive raise on his current salary, with the forward being paid around £32,000 a week in Frankfurt.

This is the competition Liverpool are up against when trying to recruit players as Marmoush will earn more than most of the Reds’ big stars at City, despite being just another member of Pep Guardiola’s squad.

How Omar Marmoush’s salary compares with Liverpool stars

Comparing Marmoush’s salary to the big earners within the current Liverpool squad, the incoming Man City star is set to take home more than the majority of the Merseyside club’s stars.

Only his fellow countryman, Mohamed Salah, will earn more than the 25-year-old, which highlights the limitations Slot is working with at Anfield when trying to compete for major titles.

Player Annual SalaryWeekly Salary
Mohamed Salah£18,200,000£350,000
Omar Marmoush£14,300,000£275,000
Virgil van Dijk£11,440,000£220,000
Trent Alexander-Arnold£9,360,000£180,000
Andy Robertson£8,320,000£160,000

This will frustrate fans of the Reds even more with Liverpool yet to agree new contracts with Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

These are three of Slot’s main players and the Dutch coach doesn’t even know if he will have them for selection when the 2025/26 campaign gets underway in August.
