The Scot has been asked to make the step up from the Academy as Amber Whiteley looks to fill out her coaching staff.

Changes continue to take place behind the scenes for the Liverpool FC Women in the wake of Matt Beard being let go a month ago. With Amber Whiteley elevated to the interim manager, there was need for additional support on the coaching staff for the senior team. The club has announced that Niamh Russell has taken a role as an assistant coach on an interim basis to fill the void.

Russell has been part of the LFC Women's Pro Game Academy for the last two seasons, working with the likes of Zara Shaw. She previously coached within the girls academy for Rangers, and has experience coaching with the Scotland youth national team. Russell will continue some duties with the Liverpool U21s, but is being given the opportunity to work primarily with the senior team squad.

Russell is very excited for the opportunity. She already has a comfort level with the Scottish contingent in the squad, and is looking forward to forging new connections.

"I'm really excited that Amber has asked for me to come in and join her staff group," said Russell.

"I'm looking forward to that exposure and working within the senior game and building some connections with the players in the squad. I've been really welcomed by the staff and player group. It's nice to have the Scottish connection there with Jenna [Clark] and Sam [Kerr], who I've known for a couple of years from back home. Mostly I'm looking forward to being on the grass and working with all the players."

Russel stated that the new combined training facility at Melwood has made for an easy transition. It is familiar environs for the Scot, and she has already had the opportunity to be around many of the players and staff due to the Academy and senior set ups being co-located.

"We have a good base of a relationship with all being on the same site here at Melwood, so I know the girls and it's now about how I can help this environment as much as I can. It's been a great experience in the dugout so far."

Russell has been involved with the senior team for several weeks now. Amber Whiteley said that the interim assistant has stepped in well after impressing at the Academy level. Whiteley is also excited to provide an early opportunity for someone, similar to a chance she was given.

"Niamh's been progressing really well in the Pro Game Academy and has made a huge impact there. In this interim spell we wanted to give an opportunity for someone to come in and develop, because I was given similar opportunities in the past."

"She has fitted in straight away, which is testament to her character and the person she is."
