Liverpool could hardly have made a better start to the season under Arne Slot.

Yes, the nature of the Reds’ dismal loss against Nottingham Forest back in September will still irk Slot, as it should. But otherwise, his team have been perfect.

Following the departure of Jurgen Klopp over the summer, that will have come as a surprise to many.

Pundits and rival fans alike had likely expected there to be a big drop-off at Anfield. After surprisingly going relatively close in the Premier League title race last season, not many had tipped Liverpool to do the same again.

It is still early days, of course, and the Reds have a big run of fixtures ahead of them which could change everything. But for now, there should be optimism that Slot can put them right up there once again.

And after comparing Slot to Klopp during Liverpool’s win over Chelsea on Sunday, former Reds defender Jamie Carragher has predicted that there could be mid-season additions on Merseyside to help the Liverpool head coach get as close as possible.

Jamie Carragher predicts January signing for Liverpool

Liverpool had been expected to do much more business than they eventually did over the summer window.

Only Federico Chiesa arrived new into the Liverpool squad, with a deal for Giorgi Mamardashvili lined up for 2025.

It remains to be seen what the longer-term plan is for the Reds, with work still needing to be done in both defence and midfield.

There is a feeling that the right signings in those areas could really propel Liverpool to where they want to be. And writing for Sky Sports, Carragher claims that if the right player is available in the winter, the Reds will ‘pay the money’ to give their squad a timely boost.

“They’re very much pushing [to win the Premier League title], as they were last season. We shouldn’t forget that,” says the pundit.

“They haven’t reinforced. It’ll be really interesting to see if Liverpool do bring anyone in in January. They didn’t bring too much in in the summer.

“And if they think they’ve got a realistic chance at the title and there’s a player that they feel fits their criteria, their model, I think they’ll pay the money to bring that player in.”

Who could Liverpool sign in January?

Liverpool have done some wonderful business during the New Year in recent memory.

The likes of Philippe Coutinho, Daniel Sturridge, Luis Suarez, Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo and of course Virgil van Dijk were all signed in January.

That just goes to show that the ‘right’ players can certainly be available and if they are, Liverpool will pull the trigger.

This time, it’s less obvious who they could look to go for when the window re-opens. Martin Zubimendi remains an interesting option but it feels as though Ryan Gravenberch’s performances are slowly closing the door on that one.

Liverpool know they need a midfielder sooner or later, though, so even if it isn’t Zubimendi, it feels most likely that a mid-season signing would be a player in a similar mould. The Reds often like to keep these things under wraps, so we may not know anything is happening until Christmas time. It would be the perfect gift for Slot to start 2025.
