Liverpool maintained their run to reclaiming their League Cup title with a 2-1 quarter-final win against Southampton.

Harvey Elliott and Trent Alexander-Arnold were the stars of the show for Liverpool as two second-half goals were enough for the Reds to book their passage to the final four of the League Cup, with Arsenal and Newcastle United also winning tonight.

With teenager Trey Nyoni also winning praise from Liverpool fans, it was a good night for the Anfield side, who heavily rotated their starting XI with Arne Slot already having an eye on Sunday’s big Premier League clash against Tottenham.

And pundit Jobi McAnuff was impressed with one Liverpool player in particular.

Harvey Elliott lauded after ‘really good’ Liverpool performance

Speaking on Sky Sports coverage of the match, the former Jamaica international was taken aback by Elliott’s display against Southampton, with the England youth international looking the part on the right-wing in place of Mohamed Salah.

With Elliott having to wait patiently for his chance this season, the former Fulham wonderkid took his opportunity with both hands, and the attacking midfielder certainly gave Slot plenty to think about going into Sunday.

McAnuff said when asked about Elliott’s performance: “We spoke before the game about those players who do come in and stake a claim for a place and really go and perform, and I think they have done.

“Harvey Elliot, again, not just his goal, every time he’s called upon, he’s positive, he makes a really good contribution to the team, and it feels like they have that great, quality balance.”

Elliott has been waiting for this sort of performance all season

It’s been a frustrating season for Elliott, with the midfielder missing a month due to injury and failing to get Slot’s attention with limited appearances from the bench having been a regular under Jurgen Klopp.

Which is why tonight’s performance was so needed for Elliott, with the youngster showing how good he can be when given a chance in the right game and how versatile he can be in Slot’s fluid attacking system.

Indeed, Elliott has a big future at Liverpool having established himself as a true talent in the Premier League, and the England youth international will be pleased with how he performed against Southampton tonight.
