Liverpool headed to Selhurst Park aiming to make it six wins from seven games in the Premier League.

The Reds have quietly worked their way to the top of the table after an excellent start to the season.

Another classic Premier League test awaited Liverpool on Saturday, with Arne Slot getting his first taste of the Palace home crowd.

It has been a happy hunting ground for the Reds in recent years, but has never been straightforward.

And so it proved again at the weekend. Although Liverpool were the better side, they just let Palace into it during a tetchy second period.

And as the home team knocked on the door, the Liverpool head coach was spotted absolutely furious on the touchline.

Arne Slot not happy with referee

Liverpool started really well at Selhurst Park but were perhaps guilty of a little bit of complacency from there on.

The Reds were incredibly comfortable throughout the first period but never put the game to bed.

It can be tough against Palace who have some really good players, but Liverpool simply didn’t do enough to kill the game when they had the chance.

It’s also fair to say that the Reds weren’t helped by a poor performance from referee Simon Hooper.

Hooper seemed intent on giving Palace a chance by allowing soft free-kicks to be given, while the official didn’t award a foul against Palace until the second-half.

This obviously got too much for Slot during the second-half, when the home team were not penalised for clear holding on Diogo Jota right in-front of him.

BBC Sport reporter Alex Howell spotted the Liverpool boss going mad after the incident.

“Arne Slot really not happy that Diogo Jota wasn’t given a free kick after a challenge from Marc Guehi,” says Howell. “The Palace centre back did seem to have his arms wrapped around him.”

Liverpool battle through difficult day

This was a tough game for Liverpool, make no mistake about that. Palace threw everything they had at the Reds during the second-half.

As well as a shoddy performance from Hooper, Liverpool had to deal with a late injury to Alisson Becker.

Without Caoimhin Kelleher on the bench because of illness, Slot was forced to give Vitezslav Jaros a senior Liverpool debut.

But protected by the impeccable Virgil van Dijk, Jaros did well to come through with a clean sheet intact.

Not a pretty win for Liverpool and there is such a lot to be improved upon. But a win is a win and the Reds can now enjoy the rest of the Premier League safe in the knowledge that non one can topple them at the top.
