Liverpool enjoyed a fine 2-1 Premier League win over Chelsea to keep their title hopes alive under Arne Slot.

Curtis Jones shone for Liverpool at Anfield, with the midfielder grabbing a goal and an assist to help secure the win.

Mohamed Salah also scored and assisted against Chelsea, with the Liverpool attacker having opened the scoring from the spot.

Before that, however, the Egyptian felt he deserved a penalty for a separate incident, but Gary Neville slammed Salah for going down too easily.

Just moments later, Jones won a penalty that Salah converted, with the midfielder involved in another penalty incident later in the match.

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer disagree over Liverpool penalty decision

He went down from a challenge from Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, with referee John Brooks pointing to the spot.

The video assistant referee (VAR), however, overturned the decision, with the yellow card handed to Sanchez rescinded.

It caused plenty of debate on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football podcast, where Alan Shearer said: "We were told about the high bar and sometimes winning the ball, or getting the touch to the ball is not necessarily enough. If you wipe the player out, then also that can be deemed as a foul or as a penalty.

"That's what I thought it was. And I thought once the referee has given it, then it was one of those where he was never going to overturn it. I was really surprised he did."

Responding, Gary Lineker noted: "I wasn't so surprised. My argument would be on that one is that when you have two players coming at each other because obviously Jones' touch was a little bit heavy, it became almost a 50-50 between the two and you have got two players coming in opposite directions, fairly quickly, fairly aggressively.

"I think the only way it can be a foul is that the person doesn't get there first. And I thought once the keeper gets there first, both basically just collided into each other.

"I thought you could equally have argued that Jones fouled the keeper, Robert Sanchez, rather than the other way round."

Curtis Jones produces best-ever Liverpool display vs Chelsea

The right conclusion was reached in the end, with Sanchez taking part of the ball on his way to bundling over Jones.

Liverpool fans weren't too happy with the decision, but they can have no complaints after a fine win was secured by their team.

Jones was in the thick of the action from minute one, with the academy graduate producing arguably his best-ever Liverpool performance.

Slot will be delighted with his side's overall display and of course the result, with Chelsea having impressed under Enzo Maresca at stages this season.

The Reds will celebrate another hard-fought victory to maintain their strong start to the Premier League campaign, but all focus will already be on Wednesday's trip to RB Leipzig.
