Report: Former Liverpool player now 'a leading candidate' to become Real Madrid's next manager

Xabi Alonso is rightfully considered one of the best young managers in European football, with the Bayer Leverkusen seemingly destined to manage either Liverpool or Real Madrid.
The former Spanish international is considered a legend at both clubs after a career that saw Alonso win silverware with Liverpool and Madrid, with Bayern Munich another club the Leverkusen manager has been linked with in recent months.
With Liverpool thriving under Arne Slot and Bayern getting their mojo back with Vincent Kompany, though, Madrid are slowly emerging as the only real valid candidate for Alonso when it comes to the former Anfield star’s next managerial job.
And Madrid’s opinion on whether or not to appoint Alonso has seemingly not changed since last season.

According to the Athletic, Alonso remains ‘one of the leading candidates’ to take over from Carlo Ancelotti at Madrid in the future, with Liverpool unlikely to part with Slot anytime soon.
The Dutch coach has been exceptional since taking over at Anfield after the departure of Jurgen Klopp, with Slot winning nine of his first ten games in all competitions with Liverpool as the Reds sit top of the Premier League standings.
As a result of Liverpool finding the dream Klopp successor in Slot, Madrid could now have a free shot at appointing Alonso as their next manager next summer, unless Munich also sense an opportunity to bring in the Leverkusen head coach to replace Kompany.
Indeed, Alonso’s future remains one of the most fascinating talking points in European football, yet for Liverpool, their former midfielder looks set to take on the biggest job in the game in Madrid with Slot working wonders on Merseyside.
Liverpool will have no regrets over their decision to appoint Slot over Alonso
Although Alonso made Liverpool’s decision for them in announcing to stay at Leverkusen for another year, the Reds will have zero regrets about how their managerial search panned out in the summer.
Slot has fitted Liverpool perfectly with the Dutch coach taking on Klopp’s squad and evolving them to the next stage in a way few would have expected, with the results speaking for themselves.
And although appointing a club legend in Alonso would have been a hit with the fans, the decision to go with Slot is already paying off big time, with Liverpool in a great position to challenge for silverware this season.
