A centre-back is on Liverpool’s list of priorities this summer.

The upcoming transfer window is set to be a big one for the Reds after not spending much cash during the three previous transfer markets with Arne Slot only seeing Federico Chiesa arrive into his Liverpool squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

A lot of Liverpool’s business will depend on Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah’s contracts as the Merseyside are yet to tie down the superstars to new deals at Anfield.

Both will require massive wages to remain with the Premier League leaders and if they leave, not only will they free up money, but the duo will need replacing.

The departure of Van Dijk would have a big impact on Liverpool, hence why Slot is now looking at a player he labelled “one of the best defenders in Germany” this season.

Liverpool takes steps towards Jonathan Tah signing

Van Dijk would be impossible for Liverpool to replace but the Reds could do so by trying to strengthen their backline as a whole and that would be made possible if they sign Jonathan Tah as the German defender will be a free agent this summer.

Tah has been admired by Liverpool for some time, but the 29-year-old is attracting interest from several clubs around Europe, one of them being Tottenham.

According to CaughtOffside, Liverpool and Tottenham have recently approached Tah's camp to gather information about a possible transfer this summer.

It remains to be seen if the centre-back is open to a move to England with the report stating that no final decision on his future has been made yet, but the Premier League clubs are fully in the race.

Tah would be a good short-term option if Liverpool can’t bring a younger star to Anfield ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, with Slot already stating this season that he is a big fan of the Bundesliga talent.

Arne Slot is a big fan of Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah

Liverpool have also been linked to Nico Schlotterbeck as a potential replacement for Van Dijk but given Slot’s past words on Tah, that increases the chances of the Leverkusen defender moving to the Premier League leaders.

Following Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen this season, the Dutch coach labelled Tah as “maybe the best defender in Germany”.

“The fact that I think Tah, who is a real good defender and is one of the best defenders in Germany… maybe the best defender in Germany, maybe likes to play more against a target man, someone who's there in the middle,” Slot said via The Metro.

The Liverpool boss was talking about the problems Luis Diaz caused Tah that night as the Colombian winger scored a hat-trick.

That didn’t diminish Slot’s thoughts on the German talent and it will be interesting to see if Liverpool make an official move to bring the Bundesliga defender to Anfield.
